December 30, 2007: FEATURED AIDS ORGANIZATION: Where: Offices in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Boston, Massachusetts Mission: The Cambodian Health Committee (CHC) works for the improvement of the health and
well-being of the Cambodian people. The agency focuses on those suffering from
tuberculosis (TB) and AIDS, who are among the poorest in Cambodian society, regardless of
race, sex, age, religion, or political affiliation. The CHC aims to help people to live
with dignity and in good health and has done so by using novel approaches that engage
family, community resources, and community health workers in these efforts. The CHC is a
local Cambodian non-governmental organization (NGO) that works in both rural and urban
settings. Using this approach, as of December 2006, CHC has cured over 10,000 people of tuberculosis and has the largest rural AIDS program (2,000 patients) of any NGO in Cambodia. The operational approaches of CHC are now used widely in both the Cambodian National TB program and globally. Vision: Today, the TB and AIDS treatment programs continue to promote innovative approaches to treating infectious diseases that works in partnership with families and communities found in the poorest villages of Cambodia. The CHC and their patients have helped answer numerous scientific questions about TB and HIV infection. The CHC is working with local and national health officials to improve the quality of treatment and care for Cambodians with TB and HIV. Mirror offices in Cambodia and Boston allow each site to leverage resources from both countries to support one another in the CHC's treatment and research objectives.
