FEATURE AIDS ORGANIZATION:

Africare

Where: "The Africare House (Headquarters) is located in NW Washington, DC. Our development assistance programs have reached families and communities in more than 36 nations on the African Continent since 1970."

Mission: "Africare works in partnership with African communities to improve the quality of life for the people of Africa. Over our 37 year history, we have become a leader among private, charitable U.S. organizations assisting Africa, addressing needs in the principal areas of food security and agriculture; health and HIV/AIDS; water resources development; natural resources management; basic education; micro-enterprise development; governance initiatives; and emergency humanitarian aid."

Vision: "Africare's work endeavors to achieve healthy and productive societies on the African continent. Our approach to development is one where we design programs with the active participation of the communities, thereby engendering community ownership of these programs. In addition, Africare forms partnerships with local organizations to ensure effective institutional strengthening and capacity building."

Formed: Founded in 1970, Africare was established in the midst of a severe drought that impacted more than 25 million people across 6 countries in Western Africa. The drought sparked a wide-spread food crisis, and called the attention of a small group of African and American leaders and development specialists to address the rising needs of hunger and malnutrition felt across the region. Niger would be the first nation to work with Africare and respond to the needs of its people through emergency humanitarian assistance. That assistance would later spread into every region in Sub-Saharan Africa. Africare permanently incorporated in Washington, D.C. May of 1971.

Serving: Africare has delivered more than $675 million in assistance-- representing over 2,000 projects and millions of beneficiaries-- since 1970.

Special Events: "Every fall, more than 2,000 international, government and corporate leaders gather in Washington, DC, at the Africare Bishop John T. Walker Memorial Dinner. The Africare Dinner is the largest annual event for Africa in the United States. Proceeds from the event help support Africare's essential mission of improving the quality of life in Africa. Honorees in past have ranged from Presidents Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, to women's activists Graca Machel and Dorthy Height, to international figures such as Colin L. Powell, Andrew Young, Bill and Melinda Gates, and the Rev. Desmond M. Tutu. This past year, Africare honored the first democratically elected female Head of State in Liberia, and in Africa-- President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of the Republic of Liberia. The 2007 dinner raised just over $1.2 million."

Needs: A gift to Africare can save a life. It's really that simple. Right now, help is urgently needed to fund projects in 25 countries Africa-wide. These Africare-sponsored self-help programs are administered at the local level and are made possible by the donations of caring individuals. There are many ways you can give to Africare:

-Join Africare as a Life Member
-Become a Corporate Partner of Africare
-Make a gift of stock to Africare
