December 23, 2007: Legacy Community Health ServicesWhere: Houston, TX
"Legacy Community Health Services is a Federally Qualified Health Center that provides quality, compassionate healthcare in a culturally sensitive and judgment free environment. Our comprehensive healthcare services include general primary care, eye care, psychiatry, dermatology, family planning, specialty care, and wellness services. Legacy's team of healthcare professionals - physicians, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, social workers, nutritionists, and nurses - custom tailor services to meet the needs of each patient regardless of age, sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or ability to pay. We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and most health insurance plans and offer sliding fee scales at three locations in Houston." Mission: "At Legacy Community Health Services, we empower our clients to lead better lives by providing premium, compassionate primary healthcare services. We are committed to serving a diverse community including those persons who have traditionally faced problems accessing quality healthcare." Formed: "Legacy Community Health Services was created with the 2005 merger of Montrose Clinic and The Assistance Fund. Montrose Clinic was founded in the late 1970s as a place where gay men and lesbians could get diagnosed and treated for sexually transmitted diseases without discrimination. In the early 1980s when AIDS first hit Houston, Montrose Clinic responded by offering support groups, education and free condoms. In 1985 when the HIV test first became available, Montrose Clinic was the first organization in Texas and the second organization in the U.S. to offer the test outside of a health department. Throughout the years, Montrose Clinic has continued to respond to the needs of the community by offering case management for people with HIV, creating an eye clinic that focused on HIV-related eye diseases, becoming a site for primary care services for uninsured people with HIV, and merging with Body Positive Houston to create a wellness center. The Assistance Fund was founded in 1988 To provide financial assistance for medication and insurance to HIV-positive persons. The organization became a safety net for uninsured HIV-positive persons. In 1996 when HIV treatment regimens became crucial to surviving AIDS, The Assistance Fund was able to help hundreds of HIV-positive people who could not afford the lifesaving medications." Serving: "Legacy Community Health Services is a full-service healthcare center open to all Houstonians. In 2006 we served more than 18,000 men, women and teens each year. Legacy specializes in STD diagnosis and treatment, HIV/AIDS testing and treatment, family planning services, and other sexual health related healthcare. In 2006, upon becoming a federally qualified health center, Legacy is able to provide general healthcare services to anyone in the community, not just those who are living with HIV." Needs: "Legacy is always in need of volunteers who want to give back to
the community. Here are some ways you can help: - volunteer your time greeting patients in our lobby, doing clerical work in medical records, or helping outreach workers in the community. - be an advocate for healthcare policy reform at the state and national level by volunteering for the Legacy Advocacy Project. - volunteer at A Lasting Legacy Resale Outlet as a sales associate, stock or price merchandise, or help in one of our warehouse sales. - donate new or gently-used items, including clothes, furniture, pictures, bar ware, glassware, chotchkes, and more, to A Lasting Legacy Resale Outlet. - purchase many of the wonderful items on display at A Lasting Legacy Resale Outlet.
