FEATURED AIDS ORGANIZATION:

Aid For AIDS

Where: Los Angeles, CA

Mission:

"Aid For AIDS (AFA) prevents homelessness and hunger and improves the quality of life and independent living for those living with HIV/AIDS.

AFA helps impoverished individuals and families disabled by HIV/AIDS pay for the necessities of life: housing, utilities, transportation, nutritional supplements, some over-the-counter medications not covered by insurance, and for those unable to transport items, the home delivery of fresh food. Assistance is intended as limited help, supplementing existing income or providing short-term emergency financial assistance pending receipt of other support, such as government benefits. AFA has linkages to over 50 other service providers throughout the County.

Over 400 dependent children currently live in AFA-assisted households, and over 60% of clients are persons of color. A consistent focus on careful management and integrity of purpose has enabled AFA to apply 90% of revenue to fund client programs. Since it's founding in 1983, AFA has touched the lives of more than 15,000 men, women, and children."

Vision: "Provide a safety net for those impoverished and disabled by HIV/AIDS, helping them to remain in their homes during a crisis and to acquire wellness items and fresh foods to enhance self-sufficiency and independent living."

Formed: 1983

Serving: Los Angeles County

Special Events:

Holiday Toy Drive December, 2007

As the winter holiday season quickly approaches, Aid For AIDS is coordinating our Annual Toy Drive for our clients' children, as well as children from low-income families served by our local partner organizations. We are looking for businesses to host drives on behalf of Aid For AIDS, encouraging employees and customers to donate toys in their original packaging. Hundreds of deserving children, from newborns to teenagers, will be provided with toys throughout Los Angeles County. To get involved and help brighten a child's 2007 holiday, please contact Yesenia Navarro, Special Events Coordinator, at ynavarro@aidforaids.net.
