FEATURED NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION:

Hispanic AIDS Forum (HAF)

Where: New York City

Mission:

"HAF's mission is to improve health outcomes for Latinos in New York City who are affected by HIV and other chronic illnesses. HAF fulfills this mission by integrating prevention and education into a set of multi-faceted wellness programs designed to:

* Improve access to care, services and other available resources for Latinos affected by chronic illnesses.

* Foster increased awareness and knowledge of chronic illnesses in Latino communities.

* Provide individual, family and group supportive counseling to reduce risks, prevent the onset of disease, and manage disease progression.

* Address attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that place Latinos at risk.

* Document the health-related needs of Latinos. * Advocate and guide the formulation of public health programs and policies that are responsive to the health needs of Latino communities in New York City."

Formed: "1985 - HAF was founded by a group of Latino health and human service professionals and community leaders in response to the devastation that AIDS was causing among Latinos in New York City and the alarming lack of public attention to the crisis."

Serving: "We serve and target the Latino community obviously because they are one of the most undeserved in New York City, but we certainly welcome all communities as well, so you don't need to be Latino to receive services from us. Our other big component in the services area is the Free HIV Testing Program. We provide rapid testing via OraQuick Advance and results are normally available in 20 minutes. There is no need to pay for an HIV test in NYC and many people still do. HIV testing should be free and it IS with HAF. Call (212) 868-6230 for more information and you can also visit our testing web site www.freehivtesting.org which lists all locations."

Services/Programs: "Services offered for people living with HIV and AIDS ranging from referrals, mental health sessions, case management, rental assistance for housing for those who do not qualify for HASA. We also offer prevention services and programs for LGBTQ youth and bisexual & gay men who continue their efforts in remaining HIV negative while at the same time educating their peers."

Needs: Donate

"Requests for volunteering are granted on a case by case basis, mostly to join us during AIDS Walk each year and some of our yearly fund raising events. Any requests and inquiries about volunteer work for our fund raising events can go to Hillary Peņa ( hpena@hafnyc.org )."
