FEATURED AIDS ORGANIZATION:

Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education

Where: New York City
Mission: "Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education, empowers young people in New York to make informed choices by educating them about HIV/AIDS. We visit schools and community groups to reach both young people and those individuals who impact their lives. We place special emphasis on outreach to high-risk communities.

Love Heals believes that HIV/AIDS education is the right of every person and that it should be taught in a safe and neutral atmosphere, in a nonjudgmental manner, and within the context of comprehensive sexuality education.

Love Heals also believes that quality HIV/AIDS education must respect and value diversity, teach tolerance, dispel stigma, foster self-esteem, and empower the individual."

Formed: 1992

Serving: New York City

Special Campaigns: The Love Heals Speakers Bureau - Love Heals uses a team approach to provide both the basic facts on HIV/AIDS and the unique perspective of someone living with HIV. Our speakers use their own stories to reinforce the message that young people must educate and protect themselves.
Our speakers bureau works in partnership with the New York City Department of Education to provide lessons towards fulfilling the HIV/AIDS education mandate (Read the mandate). We also partner with peer education programs and programs serving newly diagnosed individuals.

Over the past fifteen years, Love Heals’ Speakers Bureau has reached more than 315,000 young people throughout the New York City metropolitan area—including 44,000 last year alone.

Leap For Girls - In response to the increasing rates of HIV among young women of color in New York City, Love Heals launched the Leadership, Empowerment and Awareness Program (LEAP) for Girls in 2006. The program focuses on neighborhoods in Harlem, the South Bronx and Central Brooklyn that have felt the greatest impact from the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Partnering with individual schools and community-based organizations, LEAP for Girls provides young women of color between the ages of 12 and 18 with training in leadership skills as well as information on HIV/AIDS prevention and reproductive health issues.

LEAP for Girls seeks to train a new generation of community educators and activists. Participants develop critical skills that they will take with them into their adult lives. Empowered by this newfound knowledge, they, in turn, share it with their peers, family members and others.
