FEATURED AIDS HEADLINING NON-PROFIT FOR "EMPOWER ALL PEOPLE" 2007 AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: YouthAIDS

YouthAIDS Global Ambassador, Ashley Judd's Asia Diary

Where: "YouthAIDS and PSI are working in more than 60 countries around the world to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, especially among the most vulnerable, young people. YouthAIDS and PSI place particular emphasis on at-risk young people and engage young people themselves to design and implement its youth programs."

Mission: "YouthAIDS, an education and prevention program of PSI, uses media, pop culture, music, theatre and sports to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and reach 600 million young people in more than 60 countries with life-saving messages, products, services and care.

Focus 2007 - Women at Risk

On a global scale, and particularly in less developed countries, HIV affects women at a greater rate than men.

Inequities, driven by overwhelming poverty, affect both male and female children in the developing world. Yet cultural traditions, scant economic resources and limited opportunities marginalize young girls. Young boys have better access to health care, nutrition and education. Gender bias is reinforced throughout adulthood as men retain economic and political power.

Equality of opportunity empowers women and girls to make knowledgeable decisions about their health and fertility, and envision identities unbound by sexual, marital and mothering roles. Adolescents reach adulthood in societies that undervalue the contributions of women and perpetuate harmful gender stereotypes and sexual violence against women. Few countries guarantee women equal rights within marriage, divorce and family property. Governments and nongovernmental organizations must continue social and political efforts to ensure gender equality, provide better opportunities for, and facilitate the education of young women."

Vision: "It's about changing the world."

Formed: 2001

Serving: Young people around the world.

Special Events:

"Annual Gala which celebrates our work in over 60 countries and continues to raise much needed funds for our programs. This year's gala celebrated our success in India. Among the celebrity guests were Ashley Judd, the YouthAIDS Gloabl Ambassador, Padma Lakshmi, the host of Top Chef, Bono as a presenter and Nancy Pelosi as the honoree. This event alone raised over $1.7 million.

For World AIDS Day, we have created the Kick Me! Campaign. This campaign is a national grass-roots, youth-led campaign to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS among youth in the US, reduce stigma, open a dialogue among young people and raise funds for YouthAIDS programs. Visit www.youthaids.org/kickme and register today! The campaign goes until December 20th."

Needs: "We need individuals and corporations to partner with us to raise funds through such endeavors as our grass-roots campaign called Kick Me as well as through our Cause Related Marketing ventures. We must continue to look for the best ways to have our messages reach those who need it most - young people. We have explored social networking channels such as YouTube, MySpace and Facebook to market to our most important demographic. We must also engage the private sector and use their very sophisticated channels and expertise to reach people on a global scale. High visibility thorough our CRM campaigns coupled with our grass-roots initiatives create high visibility of our message of HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness."
